It is a well-known fact that men are the prevailing gender when it comes to certain fields of work in science, mathematics, engineering and technology, with less than 25% of workers in these areas reported to be women. Whereas, in terms of representing the overall workforce, women represent 48%. However, it is important to keep women in these important fields to ensure that gender equality is preserved and women have the chance to go into these lines of work when they want to, without facing any forms of discrimination. Women also have the potential to bring different perspectives and ideas to such an industry, all of which are important for the development of our world. So, what is holding women back from going into these fields? Well, there are several reasons for the lack of women appearing in the workforce for these scientific fields including engineering and pneumatics. The most obvious reason is that women tend not to be as interested in this field, with more of their interests being focused on more artistic and social fields. It has also been found in research that men perform better in certain areas important to engineering such as spatial abilities, whereas women perform better at areas such as languages and are more socially adept; these slight differences are widely thought to be evolutionary.
It has also been found that even from a very young age, boys at school are praised more for doing well in achievement in subjects such as maths and science, whereas girls are praised more for neatness and presentation of their school work. This in turn means that boys are more encouraged to excel in areas which lead on to more scientific and mathematic careers such as pneumatics, engineering and technology. Another barrier to women becoming more prevalent in pneumatics and such fields is because they seem to have a constant battle when it comes to proving their abilities in these areas, even when in the workplace. So, in what ways should we aim to keep women in career fields such as engineering, pneumatics, science and mathematics? One of the most integral parts in encouraging women into this line of work is to encourage and recognise achievements in this field equally, regardless of gender. For example, if a female is excelling in this line of study when at college, it must be recognised to be as much of an achievement as when a male is excelling. Another way to ensure women are represented in these career fields is to recognise successful women as positive role models for aspiring women in these fields. This will encourage women to aspire to be as successful as their role models and will allow them to recognise that women are appreciated and successful within these areas of work.
